Smudge is out of the hospital. The Bailey chair that makes him sit straight up helped him keep his food down. This chair is used for dogs with mega esophagus.
Megaesophagus is a condition where the muscular tube connecting the mouth to the stomach (the esophagus) loses its muscle tone and ability to contract. Instead of pushing food down, it becomes stretched and enlarged, causing food and water to get trapped and passively return as regurgitation. Smudge has to sit in the Bailey Chair while eating.
These chairs are special ordered and made each dog individually. There are several measurements to ensure a proper fit so that it doesn’t cause any other issues.
We called Baileychairs4dogs in California and they made Smudge his own custom chair. The amazing part is they donated to him and the rescue. Susan was amazing, she walked us through all the steps for measurements, returned my call and texts right away, even though I was texting her in the middle of the night.
Smudges heart is pushing against his esophagus and causing it to make a u shape. This chair straightens him out and gives the food a straight down direction. Mega esophagus is a terrible condition to have but these chairs are life saving. Thank you so much to Susan and Baileychairs4dogs.
